The Story Behind My Maker’s Mark

Many potters use their initials as a maker's mark, but that never felt quite right to me. Instead, I created a mark that tells the story of where my pottery journey began and the people who helped guide it.

The "R" is inspired by the railway viaduct at Calstock in the Tamar Valley, where I first discovered pottery and later began teaching. Beneath the viaduct flows the River Tamar, represented in the design by an upside-down "T" shaped as a boat on the water.

The letters "RT" were also my father's initials. He died from cancer, and including them in my maker's mark allows a part of him to travel with every piece I create.

At the lower right-hand end of the "T" is a small "J" for my mum, Janet. She has always been my steady support, the engine and tiller that helped keep me on course through life's challenges and opportunities.

Every piece I make carries this mark. It is a tribute to the Tamar Valley, where my pottery journey began, and to the family whose love, encouragement and influence continue to shape the person and potter I am today.

Meet My Elf

Every workshop needs an elf, and mine is the very best.

While I’m busy creating pottery, teaching classes and generally leaving a trail of clay and chaos behind me, my elf works quietly behind the scenes keeping everything running smoothly. She organises, tidies, cleans, prepares, and somehow manages to keep the studio functioning despite my best efforts to do the opposite.

When I’m away, she often runs the show, making sure things continue as they should. Students know her, visitors appreciate her, and I honestly don’t know what I’d do without her.

The most remarkable thing is that she’s not paid. She gives her time, energy and support simply because she believes in what we’re building and enjoys being part of the journey.

Earth2Ware may have my name on the door, but behind the scenes there’s a very special elf helping to make it all happen.
